Avon Walk for Breast Cancer 2007

Hello People,  This week one of my long time customers came by to support her friend and co-worker in getting her first tattoo.  I don't know how they convinced me, but I actually got up early in the morning to put the gloves on and crank up the machines.  (Anything for a Great Cause.)

Kali came in with the concept of a breast cancer ribbon/angelic sort of idea.  She is in her second year of walking for a cure of breast cancer.  We then decided to put some wings embracing the ribbon and keep the whole design rather simple and symbolic.  After the design was developed we dimmed the lights turned up the relaxing sounds of Sade and went to work.

At first Kali was nervous as all new bees are to the tattoo experience but after a few short lines from the tattoo machine and her friend Sylvia there by her side she was comfortable and in  for the whole new experience. Sylvia was wide awake and pondering the thought of a tattoo herself.  So we spent the time laughing and answering all of there questions about tattooing and how it works etc...  Thanks for making me think that much so early in in the day!  Ha.

Pan's Labyrinth

To all my Friends,  I wanted to share this movie with you.  I was captivated right from the beginning.  One of my new favorite flicks.  I love the dark imagery through out the movie.  I just wish it were  longer with more amazing adventures and characters. I love movies that almost look like there is a full painting in every scene. Guillermo is a genius and I am truly inspired. Guillermo will take you on a journey in the dream world and I forgot I was actually in the theatre.  JCD

Artist Shawn Barber

Last night I was watching some old TiVo recorded shows of Miami Ink on TLC.  I know I know...  I don't even know why I watch it.  I lived it for several years until I started tattooing private from my studio.  So anyhow,  I saw this artist on there that is doing quite well for himself that I thought I would share with you.

His name, Shawn Barber.  Turns out he's a bad ass artist and has developed a cool book of work based around tattoo images and well known artists.  In this episode he developed a painting for Kat Von D and Man!  Was that a bad ass painting.  It really caught my attention.  Probably cause I like stylized portraits.

Now I know this is my site and I should be pushin my own stuff but I like to support other artists that inspire me on a daily basis.  What ispired me about this guy is not just his work, but some of his words on his FAQ section of his site.  Usually when you hear guy's talk in the fine art business, too me it just sounds like a lot of fluff.  But this guy tells it like it is!  If your an artist go check this link out http://www.sdbarber.com/pages/faq_pg.html and give it a read.  It made me want to bang my head against the wall because of the business I'm in and at the same time gave me a little pick me up as we all need from time to time.

I'm not sure Shawn will be seeking me out to do a portrait anytime soon, considering my clientele refers to me as the Inland Empires best kept secret. (That tells you how much I get out from the studio)  But Shawn if your out there and you want to exchange some tattoo work...

Benjamin Moore & Co. Job Cost Estimator

This post goes out to all of us in the business.  I often find myself stuck for hours reading these posts online at art forums and such.  This evening while on the Murals Plus forum www.muralsplus.com I ran across a little tool I wanted to share with my fellow artists and faux decorative artisans.  The Benjamin Moore website is offering a tool formulated to help residential contractors accurately quote job estimates based off of taxes, price of equiptment used, and desired price etcetera.

I haven't ordered my copy of the software yet, but it sounds like an accurate way to do business and save us artists some time.  The Estimator is based in the Excel Program and is supposed to run on PC or Mac.  The Job Cost Estimator is available to professional contractors at no charge and thats the best part!

I'll give ya an update soon and tell you how I like it and if anyone is currently using this and would like to share there insights to the Benjamin Moore Co. Job Cost Estimator I would sure like to know.
