It is said that the koi originated from Persia (Now Iran). Wild carp in Japanese are called "koi".The term was also called Magoi. The koi that have been bred for color are called Nishikigoi.
The koi fish is a very popular tattoo. Not only are they very colorful, but they also have a lot of symbolism and flow well on the body .The Japanese koi symbolizes perserverance in adversity and strength. The most powerful koi will swim up stream until it reaches a waterfall. Then it will spring into the mist and develop into a waterdragon, also known as Longmen Falls (Dragon’s Gate).

The koi represents courage and and the suffering involved in daily life. Such as, having to swim through the waters without fear.
